Donald Lee Martin Jr. was arrested following an investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office into a fire reported around 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, at the YMCA located on Baltimore Avenue in Cumberland.
Officials say tenants at the YMCA, which provides transitional services for families and shelter for unhoused individuals, quickly extinguished a fire that broke out in a third-floor apartment before it could spread.
At the time, over 60 residents and employees were in the building, with another 22 women in a connected structure.
Martin was taken to UPMC Western Maryland for a medical evaluation before being charged with attempted first- and second-degree arson and reckless endangerment.
He remains held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.
Authorities say the fire caused an estimated $1,000 in damages, and no injuries were reported.
